Holistic Healing and Alternative Healing

Holistic healing as well as alternative healing are two terms that can be interchangeable in most cases. They both enhance your body's ability for self-healing with natural healing therapies. Alternative medicine or alternative healing when used with traditional medicine can complement and enhance the healing practices of both. Many old practices that were used in years past are still relevant today such as the use of herbs and herbal compresses.

The wonderful thing about our bodies is that they are designed to self-healing. Every day we can watch a small cut spontaneously heals itself. Our bodies can sense an invader and automatically send T cells to destroy them. The healing power of our bodies is amazing. It can remember what made us ill in the past and will make us immune to it in the future. The normal natural healing that occurs daily in our body is usually taken for granted.

The relationship between natural healing methods and our bodies is very empowering. It gives us the chance to be an active participant in our own recovery. We must listen to our symptoms rather than override them. Symptoms are usually messages are body sends to us so that we can make positive changes to improve our health.

Holistic medicine also incorporates the emotional and spiritual aspects of health in addition to the physical body. Some holistic therapies like meditation, hypnosis, and visualization techniques claim to change the physical body through purely mental interventions. Holistic medicine is the treatment of the whole person or the unification of the mind and body. The healing power of holistic healing stresses self-care and the prevention of illnesses. Any therapy that relies on the self-healing body can be considered natural medicine or natural healing.

Alternative healing or alternative medicine is any form or practice that is outside of conventional medicine. It can cover a broad range of practices such as naturopathy, chiropractic, acupuncture, etc. Most of these are not taught in medical school but many mainstream doctors see them as a useful tool. These then become complementary medicine.

Some of these complementary or alternative treatments are now being studied by the National Institute of Health. Acupuncture is being studied to treat depression, ADD, even osteoporosis. Hypnosis is being studied as a chronic pain relief and to accelerate healing bone fractures. These are just two of many alternative healing methods that are making it into mainstream medicine.
